A Day in the Life of Stefan Szpajda, Folio Law Group PLLC

My Day in the Life experience with Stefan Szpajda at Folio Law Group PLLC far surpassed my initial expectations. Although Stefan practices in the United States and we were unable to connect in person, he went out of his way to ensure that the experience remained engaging, interactive and tailored to my interests. His practice focuses largely on intellectual property and patent litigation, an area that was entirely new to me and initially seemed both complex and unfamiliar, but incredibly intriguing.

I met Stefan several times over Zoom, during which he took the time to understand my academic and career goals so that he could shape my experience accordingly. He initially offered me the opportunity to attend an in-person hearing in the Central District of California. While I was unfortunately unable to make the trip, Stefan adapted quickly and arranged for me to watch another remote hearing instead in the Western District of Texas. The Central District of California and Western District of Texas are two of the most common jurisdictions for patent litigation in the U.S., and both cases involve complex patent disputes. Rather than solely offering a passive observation opportunity, he provided background information and context prior to the hearing, explained strategic considerations, and outlined how patent litigation unfolds in the U.S., so I could follow along as best I could. After the hearing, he was extremely generous in taking the time to answer additional questions, clarify unfamiliar concepts, and discuss the litigation strategy in greater depth.

In addition, Stefan has graciously offered to walk me through the briefing and transcript related to the hearing in California that I was unable to attend, ensuring that I would still gain a wide range of insights from my Day in the Life experience. His willingness to adapt the experience and invest time in my learning made this opportunity far more valuable and personalized than I initially anticipated.

Overall, this Day in the Life experience provided meaningful exposure and practical insights into patent litigation, a field I likely would not have encountered in law school otherwise. I was particularly struck by the complexity of the matters. However, Stefan鈥檚 ability to break down sophisticated concepts into simple explanations made topics that initially felt intimidating much easier to understand. We had an insightful conversation about the learning curve in this area of law, and it was reassuring to hear firsthand that even experienced lawyers initially face these challenges, especially in highly technical practice areas.

During our first meeting, Stefan emphasized the importance of making meaningful professional connections early in one鈥檚 legal career. Understanding how intimidating it can be, he shared that one of his motivations for participating in this program was to help law students feel welcome to connect with lawyers. Throughout the experience, he fully embodied this approach by creating a welcoming and supportive environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussion, and I鈥檓 grateful to have been paired with him.
