Charles-Antoine Julien - 3D Library Congress Subject Heading Explorer.

Librarians use controlled vocabulary because they know it yields for relevant results.  Unfortunately few searchers explicitly use or understand controlled vocabulary found in taxonomies, subject hierarchies or the future SKOS of the semantic web for example.  Based on knowledge from information behaviour and information visualization the current research addresses this problem by developing and testing a 3D virtual reality subject hierarchy visual representation.  Integrated with keyword searching, users will be able to visually inspect subject headings written on labels hovering above circular areas sized to suggest the relative number of documents covering the topic.  They will be able travel up and down the hierarchy of broader and narrower terms by following tunnels stemming from each subject area.  As a result, searchers will acquire a mental model of the library contents and associated controlled vocabulary and in turn, become more effective searchers.

Bring your lunch. Coffee and dessert will be served.
