Professor Robert Engle, co-recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded a honorary doctorate of science (D.Sc.)

Robert F. Engle, co-recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics, is a leading expert in time series analysis and the creator of autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH), a method for the statistical modelling of time-varying volatility. His work revolutionized financial econometrics and is widely used in asset pricing and risk management. He is Co-Director of the NYU Stern Volatility Institute and co-founded the Society for Financial Econometrics.

Professor Fernando Saltiel receives tenure

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Fernando Saltiel has been granted tenure. Professor Saltiel joined 涩里番 in 2020 and has established himself as a leading researcher in labour and education economics. His work examines how cognitive and non-cognitive skills affect labour market outcomes, the role of firms in shaping skill development, and the impact of business cycles on labor market outcomes.

Professor Fabian Lange delivers Innis Lecture at the 2026 Canadian Economic Association Meeting

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Fabian Lange delivered the Harold Innis Lecture at the 60th Annual Meetings of the Canadian Economics Association, held at Simon Fraser University in May 2026. The Innis Lecture, established in 1974 in honour of the great Canadian economist Harold Adams Innis, is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to economics in the broad sense in which Innis construed the subject.

Department welcomes Assistant Professor Kensuke Sakamoto

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Kensuke Sakamoto will be joining our faculty as an Assistant Professor in August 2026. Dr. Sakamoto earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2026. He is an expert in network econometrics and its applications.

Professor Nicolas Gendron-Carrier Receives Tenure

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Nicolas Gendron-Carrier has been granted tenure. Professor Gendron-Carrier joined 涩里番 in 2018 and has established himself as a leading researcher in urban and labour economics. His work examines interactions between economic agents in cities at localized scale as well as the impacts of transportation infrastructure on urban development.

Francisco Ruge-Murcia awarded the Senior Houblon-Norman Fellowship from the Bank of England for 2025-2026

This prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Bank of England to a tenured full or chaired professor to promote research into and disseminate knowledge and understanding of the working, interaction and function of financial business institutions in the UK and elsewhere and the economic conditions affecting them.

Sonia Laszlo's promotion to Full Professor

We are happy to announce that聽Professor Sonia Laszlo聽has been promoted to Full Professor effective July 1,聽2024. Professor Laszlo has served the Department of Economics as an Assistant Professor of Economics from 2003-2010, and as Associate Professor since 2010. She has served in numerous administrative roles including Director of the Institute for the Study of International Development.

Welcome to Claire Boone

Dr. Claire Boone will be joining the Department of Economics and the Department of Equity, Ethics, and Policy in the School of Population and Global Health at 涩里番 as an Assistant Professor in August 2024. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business, affiliated with the Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence and the Center for Health and The Social Sciences.

Victoria Zinde-Walsh becomes CEA Fellow

In its most recent meeting in June 2024, the Canadian Economics Association (CEA) conferred the title of CEA Fellow to our dear colleague Vicky Zinde-Walsh. This award recognizes the achievements and contributions to our discipline of the most prominent economists who have spent a significant portion of their career in Canada.
