University Health and Safety Committees & Policies

Introduction

In response to the University’s ever‑changing needs, the current structure of the safety committees has been modified following a process of analysis and consultation.

The new approach and configuration reflect the University’s specific needs and diversity, and acknowledge the types of hazards involved in laboratory operations versus other sectors of the University. Because of this, all committees with responsibilities related to laboratory safety have been consolidated into a single committee called the University Laboratory Safety Committee (ULSC).

In addition, the new structure reflects the need for a single committee to address the various issues affecting employees and student groups associated with health and safety in the university environment, resulting in the creation of the University Health and Safety Committee (UHSC).

Finally, a third committee has been established to address issues affecting employees of University Services, and this committee is called the University Services Safety Committee (USSC).

  • The leadership and encouragement needed to continually nurture an appropriate safety culture and to instill safe work ethics in all teaching, research, and support activities.
