Master's Degree in Clinical and Translational Research (formerly Experimental Medicine)

The overall objective of the Masters program is to train students in the in-depth analysis of fundamental, translational and/or clinical research. Students perform studies at diverse levels, from molecular, cellular, and tissue to whole animal, human, and population in order to elucidate mechanisms behind human diseases, leading to drug discovery. Students are trained to perform research in both academic and industrial settings.

Applicants for the M.Sc. in Experimental Medicine (Thesis) must hold either an M.D. degree, a B.Sc. degree, or the equivalent.

Program Requirements

A Master’s Degree in Division of Clinical and Translational Research requires the student to:

  • Complete a minimum of 9 course credits at the 500+ level, which includes EXMD 634, one methods-based course, and 1 elective course.
  • Register for thesis credits (EXMD 690, 692, 693, 694)
  • Hold annual thesis committee meetings
  • Submit a thesis based on their research that is passed by either an internal or external examiner.

Time Requirement

  • The Master’s Program at ɬ﷬ requires a minimum residence of three full-time terms, i.e. andmust be completed within 3 years of first registration.
  • A student must register for at least three full-time terms (i.e., 11/2 years of residency) and pay full fees.
  • After the residency period, students register for additional sessions at reduced fees.

Topics covered include: 1) An overview of common research designs based on examples from research currently undertaken in the Division of Experimental Medicine; 2) Types of data arising from these designs; 3) Basic methods for data analysis; and 4) Application of these methods to student research projects.
  • Restriction: Must be registered for graduate or postdoctoral studies in the Faculty of Medicine or the Faculty of Science.

Computational methods (particularly machine learning methods) for various single-cell data analysis, modelling, and visualization tasks that could drive novel biomedical discoveries, focusing on “real-world” biomedical applications.
  • Prerequisites: MATH 203, MATH 223, MATH 323, one course in computer programming and additional background in Calculus and Probability is required (e.g., MATH 222, MATH 204), or permission of the instructor.

Foundations for conducting clinical research including the principles underlying clinical studies, an overview of key methods in clinical research and the critical interpretation of peer-reviewed literature.
  • There are no set prerequisites, but it is expected that the student will have some background in mathematics; understanding functions and basic algebra is essential.
