Anti-Black Racism Initiative Recruitment Awards

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) offers Graduate Excellence Recruitment Awards to Black applicants admitted to ɬÀ﷬’s graduate degree programs. These awards support ɬÀ﷬’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism and are granted through unit nomination, based on self‑identification during the admissions process. 

Value & Duration

  • PhD – 10,000, non-renewable
  • Master’s (Thesis) – 5,000,  non-renewable
  • Master’s (Non-thesis) – 2,500, non-renewable

These awards are provided in addition to core funding offered by the department, supervisor, or Faculty and cannot replace that funding. 

Nomination Deadline

Fall 2026 admits: April 30, 2026

Eligibility

An eligible applicant must: 

  • Have received an offer of admission to a graduate degree program at ɬÀï·¬.
  • Self-identify as Black during the admissions process. This can be done in the application documents or by contacting the department directly.
  • Intend to register full-time in their degree program during their first year of study.

Students enrolled in professional Master’s programs in which full-time employment and part-time studies are permitted may also be eligible. To confirm eligibility, contact graduatefunding.gps [at] mcgill.ca.

Students in self-funded programs are not eligible.
