Professor Wendy Adams to retire

Published: 3 September 2025

With sincere gratitude for her years of service, the Faculty of Law announces the retirement of Professor Wendy Adams, who has been a valued member of our academic community since 2003. Her retirement will be effective on November 10, 2025.

Professor Adams joined ɬ﷬ as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2008. Over the course of her career, her research interests encompassed commodification, legal pluralism, and the intersections of law and popular culture. She is the author of Popular Culture and Legal Pluralism: Narrative as Law (Routledge, 2017), a monograph that draws upon theories of critical legal pluralism to argue for an understanding of popular culture as legal authority, unmediated by translation into state law. She also served as Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy at ɬ﷬.

Beyond her scholarship, Professor Adams was an inspiring teacher in courses like Intellectual and Industrial Property, Animal Law and Law and Popular Culture, known for encouraging students to think critically and creatively about the law. Her courses challenged students to consider the ethical and philosophical dimensions of legal systems.

Holder of a JD from the University of Toronto, Wendy Adams clerked for the Honourable Justice Iacobucci at the Supreme Court of Canada in 1998-1999 before completing an LLM at the University of Michigan. She was an assistant professor at the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Law for four years before joining ɬ﷬ Law.

“Professor Adams’ generosity, engagement and commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity has left a lasting impact on many ɬ﷬ Law graduates and colleagues,” said Dean Tina Piper. “We are sincerely grateful for her friendship and collegiality over her years at the Faculty, and wish her all the best in her retirement.”
