Arithmetic Statistics From -163 to the Present

📄 ABSTRACT / RÉSUMÉ

For number theorists, -163 is a remarkable number! I will discuss a couple of very surprising reasons for this. Gauss conjectured, roughly speaking, that -163 was the last number which is interesting in this way -- a fact which was only proved in 1952, by Kurt Heegner. I'll explain why Gauss might have believed this, and situate the question in the context of modern "arithmetic statistics". I'll then give an overview of some recent and ongoing research directions along similar lines.
