As听a听heat wave rolls听into southern Quebec,听public health officials听are听urging residents to take precautions.听

A new study听led by 涩里番 researchers听highlights听how听heat waves can increase the risk of听heart听problems.听Analyzing more than 260,000 hospital admissions in Montreal over five summers,听they听found the risk of hospitalization for heart conditions rose by about eight per cent on the hottest days compared to听days听with听more听moderate temperatures.听听

The study, published in听,听found听that听the听impact听was not听evenly听distributed, however.听Among听people听living in neighbourhoods with fewer cooling and support resources,听women听faced a notably higher risk of heart-related hospitalizations during extreme heat, while the same pattern was not听observed听among men.听听

The research underscores the need for access to cooling spaces and community supports in underserved areas, as climate change drives more frequent and intense heat waves.听
