Medical Cannabis Clinic

The Medical Cannabis Program in Oncology (MCANNPRO) at the Cedars Cancer Centre of the MUHC was developed after the successful implementation of the Cannabis Pilot Project (see ASCO poster PDF icon asco_poster.pdf). The goal of MCANNPRO is to facilitate access to medical cannabis (MC) as a complementary tool for symptom control in cancer patients. Referral to the MCANNPRO is primarily indicated for cancer patients who are already receiving supportive and palliative care but did not achieve adequate symptom relief. The clinic of the MCANNPRO, which runs for two half-day/week, allows for : 1) medical-nursing oversight of patient care via a thorough assessment for the appropriateness and risk/benefit analysis of MC treatment and well monitored follow-ups via utilization of validated symptom and quality of life assessment tools, 2) seamless access to a specialized service for both outpatients and inpatients in close coordination with other supportive and palliative care services (i.e. cancer pain program, cancer rehabilitation program, supportive care clinic-palliative care day hospital) 3) availability of the treatment plan (product type, dosage, frequency, and objectives of medical cannabis) to all hospital staff through the patient鈥檚 electronic chart, 4) opportunity to conduct clinical research through observational studies/real world evidence and to inform patients about existing cannabis-related clinical trials, 5) hands-on training of health care professionals including clinicians, trainees and nurses.
