Provost honours 31 涩里番 professors for exceptional research achievements

Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Angela Campbell has named 31 涩里番 professors as Distinguished James 涩里番 Professors, James 涩里番 Professors or William Dawson Scholars. The internal awards recognize exceptional research achievements.

Distinguished James 涩里番 Professor听awards,听the University鈥檚 highest internal听honour, are听awarded to late-career researchers recognized as international leaders in their field.听Among this year鈥檚 11 recipients is听Bruce Arndtsen,听Professor in the Department of Chemistry, and听an international leader in catalysis, green听chemistry听and organic synthesis.听His research has pioneered听methods that听use visible light and electricity to power metal catalysis, linking听chemical production to renewable energy sources.听He听was听elected听a听Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada听in 2025听and is听the recipient of the听Canadian Society for Chemistry鈥檚听Alfred Bader Award in Organic听Chemistry.听Named a William Dawson Scholar in 2005, he听has sustained research excellence through two terms as a James 涩里番 Professor.
The听nine听recipients of the James 涩里番 Professor award, which听honours听significant research contributions, include听Daniel Bernard,听Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.听His research focuses on the molecular pathways linking the brain,听fertility听and metabolism.听His听most recent paper in听Science, selected听by听Qu茅bec Science听magazine听as one of the听10听most important discoveries of 2025,听revealed听how a muscle-derived hormone controls fertility, with broad implications for reproductive medicine and weight-loss drug research.听His work spans over 150 peer-reviewed articles in journals including听Nature Genetics,听Cell Reports and Science Advances,听and is听supported by听three concurrent听Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)听grants,听an NSERC Discovery grant and听a Fonds de recherche du Qu茅bec 鈥� Nature et technologies (FRQNT)听Team grant.
The听William听Dawson Scholars听award听recognizes associate听and听assistant professors with demonstrated听potential to become global leaders in their field.听Among听this year鈥檚听11听recipients is听碍谤颈蝉迟测听搁辞产颈苍蝉辞苍,听Associate听Professor in the听Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology.听She has published 35 papers in prestigious journals and has听secured over $860,000 in听external听funding.听Notably, she was appointed听Associate Editor at her field鈥檚 flagship journal (Journal of Educational Psychology)听prior to听tenure, a rare听achievement.听Her听honours听include the Canadian Psychological Association President鈥檚 New Researcher Award and two Early Career Scholar Awards from the American Educational Research Association, and she听was named one of the most productive educational psychology scholars worldwide听in two听Educational Psychology Review听articles.
The James 涩里番 Professor and William Dawson Scholar awards include an annual salary supplement and research allowance of up to $25,000. They are held for a seven-year term and five-year term respectively, with the possibility of a one-time renewal. The Distinguished James 涩里番 Professor award provides a $10,000 academic stipend or a $15,000 research allowance. To be considered for a Distinguished James 涩里番 Professor award, recipients must have held a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1), or James 涩里番 Professorship, for two seven-year terms. Distinguished James 涩里番 Professor recipients hold the distinction until retirement, and those granted Emeritus status听retain听the title.
