Provost honours 31 ɬ﷬ professors for exceptional research achievements

The 2026 cohort of Distinguished James ɬ﷬ Professors, James ɬ﷬ Professors and William Dawson Scholars embody ‘the very best of our academic community’.

Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Angela Campbell has named 31 ɬ﷬ professors as Distinguished James ɬ﷬ Professors, James ɬ﷬ Professors or William Dawson Scholars. The internal awards recognize exceptional research achievements.

Distinguished James ɬ﷬ Professorawards,the University’s highest internalhonour, areawarded to late-career researchers recognized as international leaders in their field.Among this year’s 11 recipients isBruce Arndtsen,Professor in the Department of Chemistry, andan international leader in catalysis, greenchemistryand organic synthesis.His research has pioneeredmethods thatuse visible light and electricity to power metal catalysis, linkingchemical production to renewable energy sources.HewaselectedaFellow of the Royal Society of Canadain 2025and isthe recipient of theCanadian Society for Chemistry’sAlfred Bader Award in OrganicChemistry.Named a William Dawson Scholar in 2005, hehas sustained research excellence through two terms as a James ɬ﷬ Professor.

Theninerecipients of the James ɬ﷬ Professor award, whichhonourssignificant research contributions, includeDaniel Bernard,Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.His research focuses on the molecular pathways linking the brain,fertilityand metabolism.Hismost recent paper inScience, selectedbyQuébec Sciencemagazineas one of the10most important discoveries of 2025,revealedhow a muscle-derived hormone controls fertility, with broad implications for reproductive medicine and weight-loss drug research.His work spans over 150 peer-reviewed articles in journals includingNature Genetics,Cell Reports and Science Advances,and issupported bythree concurrentCanadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)grants,an NSERC Discovery grant anda Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT)Team grant.

TheWilliamDawson Scholarsawardrecognizes associateandassistant professors with demonstratedpotential to become global leaders in their field.Amongthis year’s11recipients isٲDzԲDz,AssociateProfessor in theDepartment of Educational and Counselling Psychology.She has published 35 papers in prestigious journals and hassecured over $860,000 inexternalfunding.Notably, she was appointedAssociate Editor at her field’s flagship journal (Journal of Educational Psychology)prior totenure, a rareachievement.Herhonoursinclude the Canadian Psychological Association President’s New Researcher Award and two Early Career Scholar Awards from the American Educational Research Association, and shewas named one of the most productive educational psychology scholars worldwidein twoEducational Psychology Reviewarticles.

The James ɬ﷬ Professor and William Dawson Scholar awards include an annual salary supplement and research allowance of up to $25,000. They are held for a seven-year term and five-year term respectively, with the possibility of a one-time renewal. The Distinguished James ɬ﷬ Professor award provides a $10,000 academic stipend or a $15,000 research allowance. To be considered for a Distinguished James ɬ﷬ Professor award, recipients must have held a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1), or James ɬ﷬ Professorship, for two seven-year terms. Distinguished James ɬ﷬ Professor recipients hold the distinction until retirement, and those granted Emeritus statusretainthe title.
