Message from the Director

Welcome to the School of Population and Global Health at ɬÀï·¬!

I am excited to lead the School. As I reflect on my journey, I think back to the early days of when I started as a consultant at the Montreal Children’s Hospital Research Institute. I have been fortunate to spend the majority of my academic career jointly appointed in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health and the Department of Pediatrics and am a proud ɬÀï·¬ian. Over the years, I have benefitted immensely from the breadth of expertise amongst the faculty and administrative staff and the outstanding students that we work with at ɬÀï·¬.

The School of Population and Global Health is relatively new, having initially come into being in 2019. I look forward to building on the leadership of Timothy Evans, our inaugural Director and Associate Dean, who brought the School together and led the development of two departments -- the Department of Global and Public Health and the Department of Ethics, Equity, and Policy, alongside the almost 60-year-old Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health. This growth happened all while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and a move, from our historic sites on the slopes of Mount Royal to our current location on ɬÀï·¬ College Ave. My immediate predecessor, Eduardo Franco, ably served as Interim Director for most of 2025, continuing the development of the School.

The School is home to several outstanding academic programs, including a new certificate program in Health Data Analytics, and, starting in 2026, an undergraduate program in Population and Global Health, as well as established PhD programs in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Masters programs in several fields. Our students receive rigorous training in research methods, along with substantive training and experiential learning in global health, public health, and clinical settings.

Our faculty includes world leaders in a range of fields; they hold substantial funding from national and international agencies and are changemakers locally and globally. Additionally, our faculty are engaged in research and in public health practice in Canada and abroad and consult with governments and non-governmental organizations around the world. We sit within an outstanding Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, which enables collaboration and interaction with researchers from basic science to clinical medicine. I am excited to steer the School, one of six within the Faculty.
