Brains Need Open Minds campaign, the largest in The Neuro’s history, has fueled innovative brain research

An initiative to reduce wait times for spinal cord surgery, research that is testing ways to inhibit brain cancer cells, an open database for multiple sclerosis and an app that tracks Alzheimer’s progression and aids diagnosis. All these projects and more were made possible by a campaign that has raised $203.9 million for groundbreaking neuroscience research and patient care.

Philippe Leroux, composer and associate professor in Music Research at the Schulich School of Music, has been awarded the 2025 Donaueschinger Musiktage Orchesterpreis (Orchestra Prize) for his new work Paris, Banlieue. In his composition, Leroux addresses the web of relationships between central Paris and its suburbs—especially with regard to the movements of people triggered by their daily work.

Researchers at ɬ﷬ and collaborating institutions have mapped the atmospheric features of a planetary-mass brown dwarf, a type of space object that is neither a star nor a planet, existing in a category in-between. This particular brown dwarf’s mass, however, is just at the threshold between being a Jupiter-like planet and a brown dwarf. It has thus also been called a free-floating, or rogue, planet, not bound to a star.
