Peer mentor Guidelines

Formerly the Tomlinson Engagement Award for Mentoring (TEAM)

The Faculty of Science Peer Mentoring Program is an initiative led by the Office of Science Education. If you have been selected to be a peer mentor by your instructor, or if you'd like to take on this rewarding challenge, we have provided some guidelines below.

At the beginning of the semester:

If your instructor has not already contacted you, please make sure you communicate with them to ensure that your roles and responsibilities are clearly understood. As a reminder, peer mentors are just that - peer mentors, not replacements for TAs. Here are some examples of tasks you might perform:

  • Attend lectures and supporting in-class activities that involve interaction with a course’s students.
  • Respond to student emails regarding course content and posting questions and answers on discussion boards.
  • Attend the Peer Collab to support students with homework and exam preparation.

Your instructor should introduce you to the class either in person or on a slide summary and include your contact information. If they have not done so, please remind them.

During the semester:

Please keep track of the hours you are spending as a peer mentor. The time should total 25-30 hours.

If at any time you have questions or concerns, please contact your instructor, or feel free to get in touch with us directly (Office of Science Education - see contact information below). Any concerns will be handled promptly and in complete confidentiality. Your success as a student should always come first!

At mid-semester:

Your award will be processed during the mid-semester period.

To prevent payment delays please ensure the following:

  • You have an updated civic address in Minerva
  • You have set up Direct Deposit in your banking information in your Minerva account
  • You let us know if you are a part-time student

Please note that you will be able to see your Peer Mentoring award in your Student Account on Minerva.

Your Student Experience Record (SER, formerly the Co-Curricular Record) is available by logging into .

Enjoy the Peer Mentoring experience!
