Vincent Pouliot

Vincent Pouliot is a professor in the Department of Political Science, where he holds the Chair of Excellence in International Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on international organizations, global governance, multilateral diplomacy, and global history. Broadly speaking, his research seeks to better understand the past, present, and future of the modern project of “governing the world” from the perspective of its shifting power relations.

He is currently working on two book projects:

  • the evolution of the global linguistic landscape from the 19th to the 21st century through the institutionalization of the international system;

  • the evolution and precariousness of work organization in global governance, particularly at the UN.

His most recent book,(Cambridge University Press, 2023) analyzes the making of global policies based on the underlying divisions in values and practices. The book provides a comprehensive theoretical and methodological framework and applies it to the study of three global policies drawn from recent United Nations activities. His other books include:

Before joining Université de Montréal in 2025, he was James ɬ﷬ Professor in the Department of Political Science at ɬ﷬ for seventeen years, where he also directed the CIPSS for nine years until 2019. I am a Humboldt Foundation Fellow, a member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada, and the recipient of various international and national awards, such as the Hedley Bull Prize (ECPR) and the Prize in International Relations (CPSA).
