Dear clinical faculty members and students,

We know this week will be difficult, both for our students and for our clinical faculty members, as pressure tactics called for by the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) roll out.

The Faculty is focused, first and foremost, on advocating for our students to minimize the impact of these pressure tactics on their education. We are here for you, we are listening, and we are communicating the potential impacts of these tactics to both the government and the FMSQ. Together with the other medical schools in Quebec, we are urging a speedy resolution.

We have also clearly sent a message to government that our clinical teachers make absolutely indispensable contributions to training the next generation of physicians, and that this role needs to be recognized and valued.

The situation remains uncertain and subject to change. We will continue to work closely with our students to keep you up to date, and to maintain your educational activities to the extent possible.  We ask you to keep checking the School of Medicine website, where you will find all messages and a new FAQ.

Reminders for this week:

  • Med-1 and Med-2: Check one45 daily for schedule updates and room changes.
  • Med-3 and Med-4:
    • If informed in advance that supervision is unavailable, do not attend your rotation.
    • If you were not informed in advance, arrive as scheduled and confirm supervision on-site.
      • If supervised, complete your day as planned.
      • If not, return home or go to the library (note: this does not count as a rotation day).
      • If you were not supervised, please remember to fill out this to notify UGME for Montreal Campus or this for Campus Outaouais.
  • CaRMS: The FMSQ clarified on Friday that they are asking clinical supervisors to continue to conduct interviews and write letters of recommendation for CaRMS. These activities are not part of the work action. If a Faculty member offered or agreed to write you a letter of recommendation, do not hesitate to follow up with them by email.

Support Resources:

  • Students: We understand this situation is distressing. We encourage you to reach out to the Office of Medical Learner Affairs if you need support.
  • Clinical supervisors: We know many of you may feel conflicted or stressed as well. Take care of yourselves and reach out for help if you need it (ɬÀï·¬ employees can use the Employee and Family Assistance Program; physicians have access to .)

Town Halls are being scheduled with students this week, and we will continue to keep you informed as the situation evolves. These are difficult times, but we’ve faced challenges before, and, as we always have, we will get through this together.
