Voted by the EUS as Department of the Year, a lot of the excitement about Bioengineering's sudden rise to stardom is last year鈥檚 1st place at the听2023 iGEM Grand Jamboree.

I am pleased to begin this issue celebrating a great achievement. 涩里番鈥檚 iGEM team, which is made up of a large number of students from the Department of Bioengineering, won the 2023 iGEM Global Challenge. It鈥檚 the first time ever that this global prize has been won by a Canadian university, and the first time in 10 years that it has been won by a university in North America. A big congratulations to our students, and to our professors and grad students who mentored and supported the team! Wind power is a source of energy that is both affordable and renewable.

However, decision-makers have been reluctant to invest in wind energy due to a perception that wind farms require a lot of land compared to electric power plants driven by fossil fuels. Research led by 涩里番 and based on the assessment of the land-use of close to 320 wind farms in the U.S. (the largest study of its kind) paints a very different picture.

AtkinsR茅alis, formerly known as SNC-Lavalin, says it has been awarded the engineering contract for the Projet Mauricie green hydrogen hub in Quebec. The development is the latest milestone for the $4-billion Mauricie project, which is being developed by TESCanada H2 Inc. The company is proposing to build a "green hydrogen" production plant in the Mauricie region of Quebec, between Montreal and Quebec City, that will be powered exclusively by renewable electricity.

Hydrogels are engineered materials, which absorb and retain water and are currently used in various medical treatments, including dressing wounds. The problem with current hydrogels is that they adhere indiscriminately to all surfaces, which means that wound dressing can potentially damage delicate tissue as it is healing.

New funding program launching for undergraduate students

Healthy Brains, Healthy Lives (HBHL) is pleased to announce the launch of the 2024 HBHL Undergraduate Summer Research Internship. Created in collaboration between HBHL and the HBHL Trainee Committee, this opportunity aims to include students at all levels in brain health research, providing 涩里番 undergraduate students with a hands-on research experience.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this issue of Dean鈥檚 Report and to introduce myself. I am Viviane Yargeau, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at 涩里番 since 2004. I served as Chair of the Department for five years, and it is truly an honour to now serve as Dean of the Faculty.

Jacques Dubuc, Class Leader, said he and his classmates have celebrated every fifth-year reunion since 1953. 鈥淲e have faithfully participated and contributed to every reunion since graduation,鈥 says Dubuc. 鈥淲e鈥檝e also formed lifelong friendships, holding a few out-of-town gatherings between reunions that were also well-attended. We keep in touch regularly.鈥
