The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully-funded postgraduate award that enables young scholars from around the world to study full-time at the University of Oxford.
are selected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. A Rhodes Scholarship covers all University and College fees, a personal stipend and one economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the scholarship, as well as an economy flight back to the student's home country at the conclusion of the scholarship.
The Class of 2027

Information sessions
ODoS will host several online information sessions on how to apply to the Rhodes Scholarship in June and July. Topics will include eligibility, selection criteria, and the new university certification process.

University certification
The Rhodes Trust has introduced a new “certification model” to the scholarship competition. Under this model, universities must complete a short certification form to attest to the applicant’s status at the institution. The certification model will establish a baseline of institutional verification, consistent across all applicants to Rhodes Scholarships Selection Committees in Canada.
Required Certification Component (yes/no format):
- Is/was the applicant a student at your university?
- Is the applicant in good standing (e.g. academic performance; is not subject to disciplinary action; etc.)? The university will also input the candidate’s cumulative GPA.
- To the best of your knowledge, is the applicant on track to have completed an undergraduate degree by July 2027?
- To the best of your knowledge, is there any aspect of the applicant’s conduct, character, or history that is inconsistent with the high standards of behaviour expected of Rhodes Scholars, as exemplified in the selection criteria?
The university certification is a required component for an application to be considered complete.

Consideration for additional commentary
Universities will also have the opportunity to provide additional commentary about particular candidacies, at their discretion.
Students who would like their candidacy to be considered for additional, longer commentary highlighting their candidacy must submit the following documents to deanofstudents [at] mcgill.ca (deanofstudents[at]mcgill[dot]ca) before August 3, 2026, at 5:00 PM (EDT):

- CV
- personal statement
- academic statement
Please save this documents as one PDF. The file name should be your full name and the region in Canada in which you are applying.
Candidacies received after this date will not be considered for longer commentary. No exceptions will be made.
Students who wish to be considered for additional commentary should also upload their documents to the Rhodes portal and enter in the name and email address for "Certifier Registration," as mentioned above.
Note that submission of documents before the August 3 internal ɬ deadline does not guarantee candidacies will be selected for longer commentary.
Students who do not submit their documents before the internal ɬ deadline may still submit their candidacy for a Rhodes Scholarship until the close on September 25, 2026, at 2:59 AM (EDT). These students will be eligible to receive the 4-question status certification, but will not receive additional commentary.
The deadline for submitting references is September 29, 2026, at 2:59 AM (EDT).
Eligibility requirements

Eligibility
Nationality/citizenship:
- You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Applications from refugees/asylum seekers currently residing in Canada will also be considered in this constituency.
Residency:
- You must be domiciled in Canada. For candidates who were born outside of Canada, or currently living or attending university outside of Canada, evidence of domicile in Canada will be required. Customarily accepted forms of evidence include a Canadian driver’s licence, Canadian health insurance registration, or Canadian tax filing. Please contact the National Secretary with any questions.
Age
- You must meet either of the below criteria:
i. You must be aged 18-23 on 1st October 2026 (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 2002 and before 2 October 2008)
OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
ii. You must be under the age of 27 on 1st October 2026 (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1999) AND you must also have completed your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2025*.
* A university's policy determines the date of completion of academic requirement for a degree and this may be different from when a degree is considered awarded by the university or the date of a graduation ceremony. The National Secretary will make the final determination of completion where required.
Academic achievement:
- You must have completed an undergraduate degree (usually a Bachelor’s) by July 2027, and you must have an academic background and grade that - at a minimum - meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen course at the University of Oxford.
- Candidates will have a higher chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have:
- A cumulative GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher* OR
- A First Class Honours Degree or equivalent
*Once you have noted the entry requirements for your chosen course(s), you can check international grade equivalencies here. Please contact the National Secretary if you require further advice about academic requirements of the Scholarship.
English language proficiency:
- If English is not your first language, you must check that you meet Oxford University's English language requirements at the higher level.
Scholarships available
There are a total of eleven Scholarships available each year in Canada.
- Three Scholarships to: The Prairie Region (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta)
- Two Scholarships each to: Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritime Region (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island)
- One Scholarship each to: British Columbia and Newfoundland & Labrador
Applicants currently studying in Canada are eligible to apply in a region based on either of the following two criteria:
- The region in which you are ordinarily resident. If you are ordinarily resident in the Yukon, Northwest Territories or Nunavut, you may apply in the Prairies Region.
- The region in which you attended a university that has granted or will be granting you a degree. Exception: applicants who have attended or are attending a university in Newfoundland & Labrador must also be resident in that region.
