N95 Respirator Training & Qualitative Fit Testing

Qualitative fit testing relies on the user to detect the test agent by taste to determine that there is no leakage into a respirator.ÌýEHS usesÌýBitrexÌýand Saccharin qualitative fit testing method for N95 respirators.ÌýÌý

Please review the following information and the registration steps below.Ìý

Target Audience:  All staff and students who require the use of anÌýN95 Disposable respirator while performing activities at ɬÀï·¬. This course provides Qualitative Fit Testing for N95 Disposable respiratorsÌýmeasure the leakage into a respirator.ÌýThis course isÌýnotÌýintended for those who require fit testing for Elastomeric Reusable half-face or full-face respirators.ÌýÌý

Duration:  2 hoursÌý(approximate)Ìý

Certification:  Fit TestÌýcertificatesÌýare  valid forÌýup toÌý2 years.  A hardcopy, wallet sized certificate is provided to the participant.Ìý

Cost:  $75 for an in-person Fit Test, payable by FOAPAL.ÌýStudents must reach out to their department administration so that the department may provide the FOPAL directly to  rpp.ehs [at] mcgill.ca (EHS Respiratory Protection Program).Ìý

Location:  3610 McTavish, room 430Ìý

Additional Information:  In order toÌýensure a proper seal with the respirator, the user must be clean shaven and long hair must be tied back. Facial piercings and jewelry may also need to be removed.Ìý

Do not eat, chew gum or drink anything (other than water) in the 30 minutes prior to your fit test appointment.Ìý

Do notÌýpurchase any equipment prior to attending the Fit Test.  EHS hasÌýseveral N95 DisposableÌýrespiratorÌýmodelsÌýavailable for fit testing.ÌýIf you require fit testing for a specific model of N95 respirator,  you must bring a box of thisÌýN95ÌýmodelÌýwith you to the fit test.Ìý

If applicable, bring any other Personal Protective Equipment you need to wear that might interfere with your respirator to the Fit Test session.Ìý

Registration steps:Ìý

  1. ɬÀï·¬ students, staff and faculty must complete the online course and exam using the ÌýEHS Safety Training System - Web TrainingÌý

  1. Once you have successfully passed the exam (80%), you may register for a Ìý.Ìý

  1. ÌýYou must complete the Ìý  and return it to Ìýrpp.ehs [at] mcgill.ca (subject: Health%20Validation%20Form)   before your Fit Test appointment.ÌýIMPORTANT: if ‘Yes’ is answered to any of the questions in Section 2, then the user must have Section 3 completed by a physician before EHS is able to fit test you.Ìý

DISCLAIMER:  If you can’t attend your scheduled fit test session, you must formally cancel a minimum of 48 hours prior to the course's scheduled time to avoidÌýthe fit test feeÌýchargedÌýto your FOAPAL.Ìý
