It is with a heavy heart that we write to inform you that our dear colleague and friend Dr. Derek G. Gray, Professor Emeritus, passed away on Saturday May 30th

Four years ago, Astrid Parrot moved from Senegal to Montreal to study, leaving her home and family for the first time to begin her B.Sc. Honours Chemistry degree at 涩里番. Without a clear picture of what her future would look like, she took what she describes as 鈥渁 leap of faith."

She immersed herself into university life, living in residence her first year and meeting new people. She had found her place at 涩里番, but uncertainty lingered throughout her degree as she quietly wondered whether chemistry was truly the right path for her.

With the NHL playoff season in full swing, Prof. Gordon Bloom, Director of the 涩里番 Sport Psychology Laboratory and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, has been very much in demand in the media. Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic) Angela Campbell has named 31 涩里番 professors as Distinguished James 涩里番 Professors, James 涩里番 Professors or William Dawson Scholars. The internal awards recognize exceptional research achievements.

Canada鈥檚 proposed sovereign fund is drawing scrutiny over its cost and potential returns, but Sebastien Betermier, Associate Professor of Finance at 涩里番 Desautels, sees conditional upside. He argues the聽roughly $750 million聽annual interest burden is manageable if the fund is well structured and generates returns above borrowing costs.

Jet fuel shortage fears in Europe have eased sharply in recent weeks, and Karl Moore, Associate Professor at 涩里番 Desautels, says the earlier alarm was not misplaced. Initial warnings pointed to potential supply disruptions tied to geopolitical tensions, creating real uncertainty for airlines and travellers alike.

An innovative project led by Dr. Guy Rouleau at The Neuro has received major funding from Brain Canada, one of four platforms that are advancing treatment discovery across a wide range of neurological disorders. In total the four platforms are being supported with a $8,926,500 investment.

The Union and the University met on May 26 and May 27 to continue discussions on non-monetary proposals. During these meetings, the parties reached agreement and signed off on revisions to certain articles, while discussions continued on other non-monetary issues.

Negotiations are scheduled to resume on June 19.

The parties met again on May 20 as part of a conciliation session to continue exploratory discussions on a limited number of issues.

Another conciliation session is scheduled for June 18.

Negotiations are ongoing with three SEU groups whose collective agreements have expired since May 2025.

To address the growing problem of overprescribing for seniors, a new Canadian guideline is calling for routine medication reviews.

In Canada, roughly two in three adults age 65 or older . While often necessary, complex drug regimens can increase the risk of side effects and affect quality of life.

To mark Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month, we are pleased to present a new educational brochure on myasthenia gravis for newly diagnosed individuals and their loved ones.

The idea for this resource arose from a discussion between a patient with myasthenia gravis and Maxime Grenier, a master鈥檚 student in physical therapy at 涩里番, during which Maxime noted a lack of resources and support for people living with this condition.

The department is delighted to announce that three faculty members: professors Codruta Ignea, Natalie Reznikov and Carolie Wagner, have been awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of聽Associate Professor, effective聽June 1, 2026.
