The Carrie M. Congratulations to Dr. Bridget Andersen, who has received the 2026 Yablonovitch Research Prize.

The prize, established in 2022 by Eli Yablonovitch, BSc 1967, DSc 2018, and Karen Yablonovitch, is awarded annually by the Faculty of Science at convocation to a graduate student enrolled in the Faculty of Science who has achieved the best research accomplishment in experimental physics.

Eliadis notes that visible homelessness rose 40% between 2018 and 2022 and another 20% between 2022 and 2025, arguing that current government measures "are still not enough" and that Quebec has yet to honour its 1976 commitment to enshrine the right to housing under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

May 27, 2026 | Pearl Eliadis, an active member of the Quebec Homelessness Prevention Collaborative (CQPI), helped launch the coalition's proposed legal reform to make prevention a national priority in Quebec. Eliadis argues that "homelessness is not inevitable" but reflects political choices, and that prevention represents the most cost-effective response to a crisis estimated to cost the province nearly $1 billion per year.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada has announced that over the next two years, close to $50 million dollars will be spent to reduce homelessness in Montreal. About $20 million will be divided between various boroughs where the problem is acute. A further $29 million will go to frontline community groups that work with unhoused people.
