Why Participate
As a mentor, you will support an emerging researcher as they navigate the transition from doctoral or postdoctoral studies to the next stage of their career. This period can be both exciting and challenging, and mentors play an important role in helping mentees build confidence, explore opportunities, and develop professionally.
Mentors contribute in many ways, from sharing their experiences and offering advice to helping mentees expand their networks, identify opportunities, and reflect on their goals. A mentoring relationship provides space for open conversation, professional growth, and learning for both mentors and mentees.

Mentorship and Supervision
The role of a faculty mentor is distinct from that of a supervisor. Supervisors provide guidance on research projects, academic progress, and program requirements, while mentors offer broader support related to career development, professional skills, and navigating academic and professional environments.
Students often benefit from having multiple sources of mentorship. As a mentor, you can provide a different perspective, share lessons from your own career journey, and offer a supportive space for discussing goals, challenges, and opportunities.
Program Expectations
As a mentor, you are expected to:
- Attend a brief orientation session at the beginning of the academic year
- Meet with your mentee(s) at least twice per semester, either virtually or in person
- Share responsibility for maintaining communication and scheduling meetings
- Offer guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback based on your experience
- Participate in College of Graduate Mentorship events and networking opportunities when possible
Benefits of Being a Mentor
Mentorship is a rewarding experience that benefits mentors as well as mentees. Through the program, mentors have the opportunity to:
- Develop mentorship, leadership, communication, and teaching skills
- Reflect on and share their own professional experiences

All mentors accepted into the program become members of the College of Graduate Mentorship and are identified online in the mentor database. Mentors also receive a formal acknowledgement of their contributions from Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
