Contingency plan for the week of September 22

Dear students,

With respect to disruptions due to the FMSQ’s work actions, here is some information we would like you to know.

This week, we have:

  • communicated with students  via email and participated in town halls with Med 3 and Med 4
  • reviewed the data for period 3 (absenteeism and clerkship form data if not supervised)
  • planned contingency measures for week 2 of the FMSQ pressure tactics
  • been advocating for visiting electives and considerations for CaRMS

Next week, we will be:

  • reviewing the last data for period 3 (logs, EPAs, clerkship form data)
  • planning contingency measures in the case of a third week  of  pressure tactics
  • communicating with students either via email or town hall meetings
  • participating in advocacy meetings

Med 1 Class of 2029

We have updated your one45 schedule for the week of Sept. 22-26. Please make sure to review your one45 schedule, including in the morning before class to verify your room numbers.

Lectures
Any lectures given by family medicine physicians, non-physicians and tenure track professors will continue as scheduled. Any lectures given by medical specialists will be cancelled and we will post last year’s recordings in their place. 

  • For the Public Health – Gender and safety 2SLGBTQIA+ health lecture, you will have access to the CO recording by Wednesday.
  • Unfortunately, the epidemiology lead cannot be present at the course review session scheduled for Wednesday, September 24. If you have epidemiology questions, please send them to fmdcourseadmin1.med [at] mcgill.ca (Dawn) by Monday, September 22 9:00 a.m.. The answers will be published to the class in MyCourses by early Thursday at the latest.

Lab activities

The optional lab tour will occur as planned.

Small groups

Small groups will continue, but they may be condensed, and your room assignments may change. 

For RF 1, quintiles A&B have protected time in their schedule for their RF mentor meetings. If your group was planned to meet, please make sure to verify with your RF mentor if it is still happening.

Physicianship

For your Physicianship Apprenticeship course, if you have an Osler mentor meeting or clinical encounter scheduled next week, please contact your Osler mentor to verify if your meeting will take place or if it will be postponed.


Med 2 Class of 2028

Med 3 Class of 2027

While this situation is challenging, it provides an opportunity for students to deepen their theoretical knowledge in various medical fields. Use this time to read and study! There are many resources available on MyCourses, all selected by your course directors. You will be more prepared when your rotation resumes!

We ask that all students complete the Clerkship Clinical Supervision form below (according to their campus), whether or not they are being supervised. This will help us ensure CAF delivery for students being supervised as well as in planning individualized contingency plans for those not supervised.

For students starting Family Medicine on September 22

If your rotation is in Family Medicine core rotation, please proceed as planned. 

For students starting Psychiatry on September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at either the Montreal Campus or Campus Outaouais.

For students starting Internal Medicine during the week of September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at either the Montreal Campus or Campus Outaouais.

  • We will be scheduling two study days on Monday and Tuesday that will count towards the 80% completion required for the rotation. 
  • For students to have their two study days recognized, they must submit all their online cases in MyCourses by Wednesday, September 24, at 11:59 p.m. at the latest. 
  • The details about the nine online cases can be found in MyCourses.

For students starting Surgery during the week of September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at either the Montreal Campus or Campus Outaouais.

  • We will be scheduling two study days on Monday and Tuesday that will count towards the 80% completion required for the rotation. 
  • For students to have their two study days recognized, they must submit all their online cases in MyCourses by Wednesday, September 24, at 11:59 p.m. at the latest. 
  • The details about the nine online cases can be found in MyCourses.

For students starting Pediatrics during the week of September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at either the Montreal Campus or Campus Outaouais.

  • We will be scheduling two study days on Monday and Tuesday that will count towards the 80% completion required for the rotation. 
  • For students to have their two study days recognized, they must submit all their online modules and podcasts in MyCourses by Wednesday, September 24, at 11:59 p.m. at the latest. 
  • The details about the 11 online cases and six podcasts can be found in MyCourses.

For students starting their Obstetrics-Gynecology during the week of September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at either the Montreal Campus or Campus Outaouais.

  • We will be scheduling two study days on Monday and Tuesday that will count towards the 80% completion required for the rotation. 
  • For students to have their two study days recognized, they must submit all their online cases in MyCourses by Wednesday, September 24, at 11:59 p.m. at the latest. 
  • The details about the 7 online cases can be found in MyCourses.

For students on electives during the week of September 22

If your rotation is in Family Medicine elective, please proceed as planned.  For electives in all other specialties, unless your direct supervisor informs you over the weekend that they will not provide supervision, please arrive at your rotation at the designated time. Once there, the attending staff should advise you if they will supervise you for the shift. 

For students who are facing a cancelled ɬÀï·¬ specialty elective during period 4, you can submit a request for a research elective, by sending the completed Research Elective Approval Form, signed by your potential research supervisor, to mcgillelectives.med [at] mcgill.ca (Melissa) and jacques.balayla [at] mcgill.ca (Dr. Balayla) for review and approval. Once approved, it will need to be submitted in the portal following the cancellation of the cancelled specialty elective.

Professionalism concern related to late booking or cancellation for period 4 will be waived.

Planning future electives

Some of you may still need to book electives for later periods (e.g. period 7 or later). We encourage you to do so and have advised faculty and administrators to review and process these requests in order for all of us to be prepared once the pressure tactics are over.


Med 4 Class of 2026

There are  many resources available on MyCourses, all selected by your course directors. You will be more prepared when your rotation resumes! 

You can also use this time to prepare your CaRMS dossier, including:

  • Review the residency program descriptions that you are interested in on the . Write to your referees as soon as possible to remind them of the deadline for the CaRMS reference letter (Oct 15 if requesting translation via CaRMS, Nov 26 if no translation is required). When writing to your referee, we suggest that you include your cv, remind them about the interactions and cases that you shared with them, and inform them of the elements that need to be included in the reference letter (found on the residency programs description webpage)
  • Update your CV
  • Start drafting your letters of intent and make sure to respond to the questions or elements mentioned in the residency programs description.

We ask that all students complete the Clerkship Clinical Supervision form below (according to their campus), whether or not they are being supervised. This will help us ensure CAF delivery for students being supervised as well as in planning individualized contingency plans for those not supervised.

For students starting Emergency Medicine on September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at Montreal Campus. Please verify your e-mail on a daily basis in case this changes over the next few days. 

  • The EM SIM Centre day scheduled for Thursday, September 25, will take place. 
  • Students are expected to arrive at the Sim Centre 15 minutes before the time scheduled in their one45 calendar.
  • Please also make sure to have submitted your quiz on Echo Guided Life Support via myCourses by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24.

In CO, the Emergency Medicine course is running, therefore, students are expected to arrive for course orientation as planned in their schedule.

For students starting Geriatric Medicine on September 22

Unfortunately, currently, there is no site that is supervising students at the Montreal Campus. 

  • We will be scheduling two study days on Monday and Tuesday that will count towards the 80% completion of the rotation. 
  • For students to have their two study days recognized, they must submit all their learning module short answers questions (SAQs) in MyCourses by Wednesday, September 24, 11:59 p.m. at the latest. 
  • These modules include Frailty, Urinary and Fecal Incontinence, Delirium, Falls, Pharmacology, and Elder Abuse.

In CO, the rotation will run as planned for the time being. Please refer to your clinical schedule.

For students on electives during the week of September 22

  • If you will be going away on a visiting elective outside Quebec, please proceed as planned. 
  • If you will be going away on a visiting elective in another Quebec medical school, please verify with the other school's administrative staff or supervisor if you will be supervised on Monday. Most specialty electives at other Quebec medical schools are cancelled, with the exception of Family Medicine.
  • For ɬÀï·¬ electives, if your rotation is in Family Medicine elective, please proceed as planned.  For electives in all other specialties, unless your direct supervisor informs you over the weekend that they will not provide supervision, please arrive at your rotation at the designated time. Once there, the attending staff should advise you if they will supervise you for the shift.
