Dear students, clinical faculty members and UGME administrative staff,

With the pressure tactics called for by the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) ongoing we know this week has been challenging. We have a few updates and reminders to share, but first, we wanted to lead with our gratitude.

Thank you to the dedicated UGME team, both academic and administrative staff, who are working tirelessly to support students and deliver on our educational mission at a high standard, despite the challenges.

Thank you to our students, for your understanding, the open lines of communication, your support of each other, and your creative ideas.

And thank you to the clinical faculty who are continuing to teach, notably those in Family Medicine who are not covered by the FMSQ call to its members to halt supervision and teaching of medical students. For FMSQ members who have decided to adhere to their Federation’s work action, we understand and respect this difficult choice. In line with the FMSQ directives, we encourage you to support students by continuing academic duties that are not part of the work action – such as by writing reference letters for CaRMS applications and contributing to CaRMS interviews.

As the situation evolves, we will continue to keep you updated. A reminder that all of our messages, an FAQ and other resources are available on the School of Medicine website.

Updates:

  • The Fédération des médecins omnipraticiens du Québec (FMOQ) announced Tuesday evening that it was beginning pressure tactics. As of today, the FMOQ work action does not affect teaching and supervision.
  • Clerkship students will receive an email later today outlining plans for the next week.

Reminders:

  • Med-3 and Med-4: Please fill out this brief form to inform us of the days you were not supervised on your current rotation.
    For students at the Montreal Campus:   &²Ô²ú²õ±è;
    For students at Campus Outaouais:   &²Ô²ú²õ±è;
  • Med-1 and Med-2: Check one45 daily for schedule updates and room changes.

In concert with Quebec’s other faculties of medicine and university leadership, we are continuing to stress to the Quebec government and the FMSQ the serious effects of these pressure tactics on the progress of our students and, eventually, on healthcare in Quebec. A rapid resolution of this crisis is critical to minimize negative impacts on our students now, and to assure the continued renewal and growth of a well-trained physician workforce to meet societal needs over the coming months and years. We also continue to advocate for the recognition of the vital teaching and mentorship roles played by clinical faculty members across our network, and across the province.

Again, thank you to all the members of our community who are rallying together during this difficult time.
