Dr. Richard Fraser, Director of the Maude Abbott Medical Museum, provides a brief description of the function and/or use of the equipment.

This instrument (also known as an inductorium) consists of a graduated boxwood scale on a polished mahogany base that folds in two (when unfolded, it measures 1 meter in length). It was used to provide a variable amplitude electrical stimulus for studying muscle or other excitable tissue. On the base are two cylindrical coils. The primary one (P) was firmly attached to the base and was connected by a switch to a power source (PS). A current flowing through the primary coil induced a voltage in the secondary coil (S). Sliding the moveable secondary coil further away from the primary one generated a decreased amplitude stimulus.
