Dr. Richard Fraser, Director of the Maude Abbott Medical Museum, provides a brief description of the function and/or use of the equipment. 

This standard cell battery was used to give a voltage reference standard of precisely 1.01830 Volts at
20 °C. It employed mercury and cadmium amalgam electrodes in a cadmium sulfate electrolyte and was designed for calibrating other voltage-measuring devices – such as potentiometers – to ensure accuracy in electrical measurements.
